An adaptation of the poem "If I Must Die" by Refaat Alareer (1979-2023). Alareer was Palestinian writer, poet and University professor, born in Gaza City, who founded an organization dedicated to matching Gazan writing students with outside author mentors to learn to use storytelling as a form of resistance. Alareer also died in Gaza City, killed by an Israeli airstrike on December 6th, 2023 at the age of 44 by what has been described by the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor as a deliberate and surgical targeting. His brother, sister, and four children were also killed in the strike.

Four months after her father's assassination, on April 27th, 2024, Alareer's daughter, husband, and their two-month old son were also killed in an Israeli airstrike on their building in Gaza City.
