Fourteen

Two women talking. One says "This weekend my daughter is going to take the train by herself to NYC for the first time!" The other says: "I remember doing that!"
"How old us your daughter?" "14"
"14... that reminds me. I was just at the airport."
"To meet this girl, brought over from Gaza. She lost an eye."
"I didn't realize you were so involved." "Yes..."
"This girl was so tall, I thought she must have been 18 or 20."
She hugged me. The hug was long. It had a heaviness that I can't put into words.
"She traveled here, from Gaza. All alone."
"I found out later that she is 14. Maybe that's why she hugged me that way, because she's still a kid."
